Tools to Manage Your Twitter Followers

Managing Twitter followers can become a time consuming task, taking time away from actually sending messages and growing your influence. Here are six tools to save you time.

Twepe

A little gem of a tool. Twepe, for a small cost, sends you a daily summary email of your Twitter follower activity, including new followers and lost followers, and alerts you immediately with an email of any mentions. The one alert it doesn't send is favorite tweets.
Twitter can do some of these things  but individually, so you receive an individual email for each follower gained and any mention. This can become overwhelming personally I turn most Twitter notifications off and use Twepe instead.Uses of Twepe include analyzing who you should follow back and spotting Twitter bots that follow you one day, and unfollow the next in the hope you have followed them back.

Followerwonk

Followerwonk offers several tools. You can analyze and chart your followers by age, message volume and other metrics; view and sort all of your followers in a spread sheet format, allowing you to see the most influential or least active; search Twitter bios of your followers and their followers; compare followers and analyze their activity, and unfollow without leaving the site.

Manage Flitter

Most Twitter accounts will be following accounts that don't follow them back or are inactive. These reduce the ratio of followers to followed accounts and make the account look less influential in the eyes of many. Finding and removing those that have no value to you manually is a waste of time.
That's where Manage Fitter comes in. This free tool scans your account  and then lists all of your followers. You can then sort them by volumes of followers, accounts they are following, the number of lists they are in and the volume of tweets they have sent. There are also filter options for accounts with no photo, that aren't in English or are quiet or very talkative.
Once you've sorted your followers the way you desire I suggest inactive, no photo and not following back as three to start off with – you can then tick and bulk unfollow accounts in one go.

Tweepi

Tweepi is another tool for finding people who don't follow you back and unfollowing them, with features including the ability to enter a username, sort their followers or who they follow and then follow some of those accounts, follow accounts on another member's list or paste in a list of user names and review those accounts. These features are useful for growing the list of accounts you follow in the hope of gaining followers back.

Contaxio

Contaxio works across Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ to varying degrees, determined by the functionality their individual APIs support.Contaxio feels a more "serious" a product than some of the other Twitter tools out there - clean interface, support for multiple platforms and the ability to export data. As with most tools there are free and paid versions.
Features include the ability to analyze followers and your following and take action against those you select. There are a lot of features here worth checking out - the one "missing" sophisticated feature is the ability to see the overlap between profiles across networks, and added accounts on one platform you already follow on another.

How To Get One-Way Backlinks

In the world of World Wide Web, back link is a well known word. Back links are incoming links to a website or web page. With some 150 million websites online, it is not easy to stay on top of all these sites. Traffic for a website comes in many different ways and the traffic from search engines is the most desired. Unless your site is a popular one like Yahoo or MSN, you have to rely on the search engines for your traffic.
Find out how to get back links to your website or blog using these easy methods.
Good Content
Every webmaster or blogger know this thing. Make good content is good for your website or blog. It can be a magnet for other webmaster or blogger to put your link on their page because you have great content which deserve to read by their visitors.
Blog Commenting
This has been said over and over again and some people do not believe in its value, but it is a good way to get quality back links to your site. Make sure the blog is do follow and that you leave a helpful comment that contributes to the blog post. Do a quick search in Google for “do follow blogs” and you will have a list of quality, high page rank blogs which do not use the no follow tags. I recommend downloading the Firefox add on Quakerism, as it allows you to see which links at blogs use the no follow tag and which do not.
Forum Posting
Forums are the online communities where you can share the word about the topic you are interested in and you have some knowledge about. The idea is to contribute the forum, which means you should share valuable information with other participants. Also you have an option to advertise your website. At the bottom of every post you come up with, you can place links to your websites following forum rules of course. This way the more topics you post or answers you give the more backlinks to your website you get.
Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is similar to bookmarking in your browser. Wikipedia defines it as a method for internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet. These bookmarking sites are the best way to get one way links. The idea is to get your website bookmarked. The more it is bookmarked the better it is for your website.
Article Promotion
Article promotion is still a great way to create traffic and back links to your website and for the most part is free. Just make sure your author bio box is well written and includes links to your blog. This is what gets the links to your blog as most article submission sites don’t allow direct links. If they do then link away in the article also.
Link Directories
Link directories are the easiest way of getting back links in my opinion. Make sure the directories you select to submit your site are high quality ones. Don’t forget to select a proper category for your site as choosing a proper category will ensure that the back link is from a related keyword.

When to Post on Facebook, Twitter &Tumblr for More Benefits

The best time to post content with a link on Twitter is 1 to 3 p.m. EST Monday to Thursday. Over on Facebook, between 1 and 4 p.m. midweek is the sweet spot, while Tumblr users are more likely to click after 4 p.m. and especially on Fridays.
URL shortening service Bitly has released a series of graphs demonstrating the optimal time and day to post on each of these three social networks.
“By understanding the simple characteristics of each social network, you can publish your content at exactly the right time for it to reach the maximum number of people,” Bitly advises in their blog post announcing the data.
Posting a link to Twitter after 3 p.m. on a Friday is pretty much pointless, based on their cumulative data on the number of clicks on bitly links from each social network. Over on Facebook, traffic peaks midweek, with Friday and weekend posts apt to receive far less attention. Posts between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. any day of the week are fighting an uphill battle for clicks.
On Tumblr though, Friday is a great time to post, says Bitly. Here, they actually recommend waiting until after 4 p.m. to post.
The traffic peak on Tumblr occurs between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, with Sunday just slightly behind. In fact, posts made after 7 p.m. receive more clicks over 24 hours, on average, than links posted during the week, midday. This runs counter to what you see on Facebook and Twitter, thanks to the culture and behavior patterns of each network, they said.
Early afternoon from Monday to Thursday are optimal times to post links to Twitter, specifically between 1 and 3 p.m., says Bitly. The peak traffic time runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., but posting later in this window increases the likelihood of content going viral.
On Facebook, links posted between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. get the most clicks, with the absolute peak being Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Bitly’s latest look into time and day posting trends expands upon their September research into the half-life of links posted through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. In that study, they found that their links have, on average, a 3 hour half-life.

Use Twitter to Endorse Your Product

Twitter has proved itself to be an effective online marketing tool, some businesses make the mistake of using it as a mere promotional device. If you want to benefit from your Twitter marketing efforts, you have to be smart in building your follower base.

Establish Your Profile
When creating a Twitter account, you have to make sure that all fields were filled out. Include your company’s website so they’ll know where to go in case they’d want to know more about your brand. You can also personalize your account’s background and interface to match your company’s branding.

Create Your Follower Stand
You can basically invite your friends to follow you on Twitter by importing your email contacts. Additionally, you can add a “Follow Me” button on your website, blog, business cards and email. You can also search for users that you can consider as a potential customer, or see who follows your competitors and follow them.Just remembers to balance your followers-following ratio. Instead of abruptly following hundreds of users, start with a small number, and then wait for the majority of them to follow you back.

Twitter Dynamics
Twitter is designed to be a social networking tool and not as classified ads. That’s why over doing company or brand promotion is considered as spamming. Every online marketer knows that spamming is a big no-no in all social networking sites. The key for a successful Twitter marketing campaign is to interact with your followers on a personal level.

Share Relevant Content
Just like in any social media sites, content is king. Sharing contents that will draw your followers’ attention is one way to gain loyal audience for your brand. However, you should learn to share content other than your own.

Learn from Your Competitors
If your competitor has a Twitter account with a very active and large community, you have to analyze their strategy. See what techniques work for them, and think of a way on how you can use it to your own advantage. Don’t just imitate though, study what other Twitter marketing efforts you can use to get ahead of them.

Google Penguin Update

There are a number of reasons your site might have been hit by Google’s recent Penguin update. Barring any unintended penalties, the algorithm has wiped out sites engaging in web spam and black hat SEO tactics. In other words, Google has targeted any site that is violating its quality guidelines.

One major thing you need to avoid is cloaking, which is basically just showing Google something different than you’re showing users. Google’s Matt Cutts did a nice, big video about cloaking last summer. He calls it then “definitive cloaking video,” so if you have any concern that you may be in the wrong on this, you’d better watch this. It’s nearly 9 minutes long, so he packs in a lot of info.

With Penguin, there’s been a lot more talk about bad links costing sites. Link schemes are specifically mentioned in Cutts’ announcement of the Penguin update, and Google has been sending webmasters a lot of messages about questionable links recently. That’s definitely something you don’t want to ignore.

But while Google didn’t mention cloaking specifically in the announcement, it did say the update “will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines.” Cloaking fits that bill. Google divides its quality guidelines into basic principles and specific guidelines. Cloaking appears in both sections.

“Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines,’ Google says in the Basic Principles section. “Don’t deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as cloaking.
In the Specific Guidelines section, Google says, “Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.” This has its own page in Google’s help center. Specific examples mentioned include: serving a page of HTML text to search engines, while showing a page of images or flash to users, and serving different content to search engines than to users.
“If your site contains elements that aren’t crawl able by search engines, you shouldn’t provide cloaked content to search engines,” Google says in the help center. “Rather, you should consider visitors to your site who are unable to view these elements as well.”

Google suggests using ALT text that describes images for users with screen readers or images turned off in their browsers, and providing textual contents of JavaScript in a noscript tag. “Ensure that you provide the same content in both elements Google notes.“Including substantially different content in the alternate element may cause Google to take action on the site.”

How Google Uses Organic Search

Insatiably curious blogger Potpie Girl stumbled upon an indexed copy of Google’s training manual for human URL quality raters in October. The 120+ page guide was more a reinforcement of search engine optimization best practices than an earth shattering revelation of the inner workings of the organic algorithm.
The actual influence of these human raters is debatable; many believe they are used in troubleshooting and improving the algorithm, rather than having a direct impact on rankings.Matt Cutts, Google Distinguished Engineer and head of the web spam team, tackled the subject in a Google Webmaster Help video blog yesterday.

Raters Are Really Not Used to Influence Google’s Rankings Directly

Human raters work under the Search Quality Evaluation Team and are used in the initial testing phases of proposed changes to the organic search algorithm.

“There are hundreds of raters who are paid to give a URL say, ‘Is this good stuff Is this bad stuff? How useful is it. Cutts explained. Once those URL ratings are assigned, engineers can test proposed algorithmic changes within Google’s internal corporate network and have the new results evaluated. That evaluation of new results should show whether the results tend to be better, according to Cutts.

“Raters Might Miss Some Spam or Might Not Notice Some Things

One of my previous posts discussed whether it was possible to try to optimize your site for Google’s human raters. At that time, a person claiming to be a Google rater had said in a forum that they processed between 30 to 60 of these evaluations an hour. They really weren’t going into any depth and were looking for more glaring issues. There are hundreds of them working to evaluate URLs, giving Google insight into trends in proposed changes and the new results they produce.
If a proposed change makes it past these initial test phases, it is put to a side-by-side test, where two sets of results are pitted against one another and evaluated for relevance and improved user experience.

You Just Might Be a Human Rater

After all of this internal testing, Google serves up the new results to a small percentage of users and use a variety of indicators to gauge user satisfaction. Human raters are no substitute for the intuition and the experience search engine engineers have, explained Cutts, pointing out that a change that rid results of spam may not resonate as the best site for the user.
“We do take the evaluation and the results of human raters as well as the analysts who evaluate those results very seriously. We want to make sure that we’re launching a change that is overall a big improvement  ideally, at least an improvement for users.

Those Ratings Don’t Directly Affect the Search Engine Results

Cutts tries to lay the rumor to rest that Google’s human quality raters have a direct influence on search engine rankings. Rather, they are a part of the massive testing process leading to some 500 or so tweaks to Google’s search algorithm annually. If you can get your hands on a copy of the Google Human Search Quality Raters Guide, it’s still worth a read, if only to reinforce best practices in white hat SEO.

Is Google+ is Unwanted?

Google+ has been around for almost a year now and shockingly enough despite industry professionals rambling on and on about how “intuitive” and “user-friendly” the platform is, it has yet to make even the smallest dent in social networking stranglehold controlled by Face book and Twitter.

But although the fledgling network’s only users are tech geeks and Google fan boys, that haven’t stopped SEO experts from rolling out article after article about how important “social shares” on Google’s new social network are.

No one wants to participate in another social network

I don’t know about you, but right now, it’s as much as I can handle just to stay on top of my Face book and Twitter accounts.  With conventional social media wisdom suggesting that I need to regularly post content, engage with my followers and connect with industry thought leaders in order to be effective on these sites, I’m going to need to see a pretty significant benefit to duplicating these efforts across yet another social network before I’m willing to put my time and energy Google+.

Sure, some people say it’s a better organized Face book but I don’t need another Face book.  I already have a Face book account that I’ve spend years growing and developing.  My content is there and my audience is there and from the looks of things, these followers aren’t in any big hurry to move to yet another social network either.  A quick Google search for the phrase “social network burnout” clearly demonstrates that I’m not the only one feeling overwhelmed by the number of sites you’re supposed to participate on.

No one wants personalized results

Despite how insistent Google is on shoving social/search integrations down our throats, personalized SERPs aren’t any more useful than traditional SERPs in fact, sometimes they’re much less useful.

I come to Google because I trust their algorithms to provide better results than the other search engines on the market today.  And I trust that they’re carefully parsing through thousands of potential results in order to determine which specific piece of information will best suit my needs.

The replacement of traditional SERP results with personalized recommendations also turns into a pretty major issue when you recognize that the audience found on Google+ is almost exclusively male.  While that isn’t an issue for an emerging social network, it becomes a big deal when you try to shoehorn user perspectives into shaping the world’s largest search engine’s results.

No one wants constant Google integrations

But while these two issues are mere frustrations that complicate the Google experience, the final nail in the Google+ coffin is the increasing encroachment of Google services where they have no business being.

With the launch of Google+, it seems that the web’s largest search engine has forgotten both its primary service offering and its mission. As an example, consider the case study put forward by Chris Crum on Web Pro News, showcasing how Google’s latest Search plus Your World update prioritizes Google properties at the expense of results quality.

So if these extensive integrations don’t serve the user, what’s the point in rolling out frustrating update after frustrating update? I believe the bottom line is this. With the digital world moving away from traditional search and towards highly-specific apps for managing different facets of life, Google needs access to your personal data and it needs it now.

The Internet is the world’s greatest collection of knowledge, but increasingly, that wisdom lives in walled off apps. It lives in services and platforms. Places where we build up relationships, express preferences, and reveal so much about ourselves. We’re on Foursquare and Netflix and Face book and Twitter and Skype. We’re interacting in real time, and in ways that don’t lend themselves well to indexing. Google can’t know exactly what’s going on in all those places.
